Mid-Summer Garden Checklist: What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Be Doing Right Now
As we head into the second half of summer, your garden is at its most active — and its most demanding. High temperatures, longer days, and occasional dry spells can stress your plants, turf, and soil. That’s why having a mid-season plan makes all the difference.
Whether you’re an avid gardener or just trying to keep things tidy, here’s your go-to mid-summer garden checklist.
✅ What You Should Be Doing
1. Mow Smart — Not Too Short
Grass grows quickly in warm weather, but don’t cut it too low. A slightly longer lawn helps retain moisture and protects the roots from heat. Mow regularly, but raise the blade a notch to encourage healthier turf.
2. Deadhead Flowers
Removing faded blooms from annuals and perennials encourages new growth and extends the flowering period. Focus on plants like roses, petunias, and daisies to keep them looking fresh.
3. Water Early or Late
Just like during a heatwave, the best time to water is early morning or late evening. This minimises evaporation and gives water time to soak deep into the soil. Water less frequently, but more thoroughly.
4. Tidy Up Beds and Borders
Weeds thrive in the summer sun. Keep beds clean by removing overgrowth and applying mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
❌ What You Shouldn’t Be Doing
1. Don’t Fertilise Heavily
Avoid using strong fertilisers in mid-summer unless your plants are showing clear signs of nutrient deficiency. Overfeeding in hot weather can burn roots and overstimulate stressed plants.
2. Hold Off on Major Pruning
July and August aren’t ideal for reshaping hedges or cutting back trees heavily. Minor trimming is fine, but wait for cooler weather to do major structural work.
3. Avoid Transplanting
Transplanting in high heat can shock the plant and cause it to wilt or die. If it can wait, leave repotting or moving plants for early autumn.
